Poor little butterfly

I found this at the end of my driveway this evening. I think it was a Red-spotted Purple. Am I right?

It seems such a shame for a butterfly to go so many perils and end up getting hit by a car. While I can't identify it, it is a lovely one.

A little less me-centered comment:

One of my favorite memories of the year I spent in the boondocks of Athens Co. was the butterflies that were EVERYWHERE that fall (in comparison to the numbers I saw during the previous 11 years in the city), taking dust-baths along our country road, and rising & falling in waves as the car passed.

Awww.
I had several around last year, none this summer.
Hmm.

Maybe they flew over to visit you.
