I'm Getting Better

Remember these pieces?

Well, here they are after firing and glazing:

The thing next to the bowl is either a mug without a handle or a short tumbler. It is just a tad too
wide to fit comfortably in my hand as a drinking glass, but I think that is how I will use it.

I used paint-on glaze instead of dipping, which is how I have glazed everything else so far. The advantage of painting is that you can put the colors exactly where you want them. Also, there is a wider choice of colors in the paint-on type glazes at the studio. The disadvantage is that it is tedious. You have to apply each coat three times. BOR-ring!

The outer color is called "butternut," the inner one is "bamboo." I like they way they look, but even more surprising is how they feel. The bamboo inside is much smoother, while the outer butternut part has a rough feel to it. I don't know if that is a function of the glaze itself, or the way I finished the clay during the throwing process.

So far, I'm liking the throwing phase better than the glazing one. A new class started last night, and I am just a bit disappointed. There are 4 newbies, and Rachel has started back at the beginning again. She said to me, "You can follow along with the class, or you can do whatever you want." Not exactly the level of teaching I was hoping for.

Towards the end of the two hours, I talked with her about what the plans were for me, and she did give me some direction. The goal? To make a mixing bowl. Wish me luck!

I think the tumbler would make a fine pot for holding a small plant. You know, one that has it's own plastic holder so you can take it out to water it.

You're work is amazing. Way to go!

I like. That's not a mug though, that's a toothbrush/toothpaste holder. I thought you would know that ;)

I know the frustration of the starting over with a new class thing. When I'd been in belly dance for over a year, I was the only one left in that class at her home so she invited me to take a class she was offering at a local holistic health place. But it was advertised as a 'Learn to belly dance in 6 weeks!' thing and you simply canNOT learn it in 6 weeks. 6 years is closer, no joke. So women would get frustrated and drop out and 6 weeks later, I'm back with a new group starting from scratch. I'm thinking "Ok, I've had 'snake arms' down pat for a year now, can we do something else?"

That's when I found a new instructor, lol.
